  1. you need to know what size, what kind of wood, and the type of strings you want. also, do not buy it in the US, if you have to, order it from Hawaii, because they are authentic. They can be pricey, so it really depends on how much you want to pay also. They can be 15-500 dollars, so make sure you know what you want.

  2. Generally, ukes come in 3 basic sizes...soprano, (the smallest) concert and baritone. (the largest)

Baritones are tuned exactly like the first 4 strings of a guitar....and they often do not have that high pitched 4th string, associated with the traditional uke sound.

Soprano's and Concerts have the traditional uke sound that you hear on commercials and a lot of recordings.

Try to find a uke with a "solid top."  This is very important for the life of the ukulele.

I own 4 ukes and you can't go wrong  with  "Applause,"  "Bushman," and "Flea" brands of ukes...all very nice instruments.

The earlier poster is correct that Hawaii makes some incredible instruments...for a great lower priced beautiful uke...do a search on PONO ukes.

Here's a web site where you can do research in the "Forums" to see what many uke afficionados recommend.

Scroll all the way down the page, and on the right hand side you'll see something called 4th peg forums...click on that, ask questions and research your purchase.

         Best of luck...http://www.4thpeg.com/
