I am looking to book a tour of the South Island of NZ for June. Lots are 7/14 days - is 7 days long enough?

Can anyone recommend a tour of max length of 8/9 days? I am traveling with my boyfriend, we are both 25, we would prefer to travel with younger people but not on a shoe string!

  1. the 2 main group tour operators are kiwi experience

    and Magic bus

Being a kiwi I'm sorry i haven't ever actually been on a tour through either of these operators so not sure which has the best "reputation" as such... 8/9 days isn't really long enough but you should hopefully be able to fit in the "must sees of the South island"

Some must sees in the south island are Queenstown, Te Anau/Milford sound, the Glaciers (fox and Franz Joseph), Mount Cook, New Zealand's highest peak,  Abel Tasman National park at the top of the south island near Nelson for gorgeous golden sand beaches and the Marlborough sounds, which if you can fit in a ferry trip from Picton (top of the South island) to Wellington (capital of NZ bottom of North island) are well worth a view.

Hope this helps and Good luck :-)

  2. If you want to see New Zealand properly, you need a month in each island. 7 days is simply not enough to see everything it has to offer. The South Island has some of the worlds most beautiful scenery, and you would only begin to scrape the surface in 3/4 weeks.

  3. You are not going to see too much in 7/14 days so you are best to limit to a small area such as Queenstown/Te Anau/ Milford Sound. Or Nelson, West Coast and back to Christchurch.

Have a look at http://www.holidays-in-newzealand for some useful information, on what there is to see and do, and transport options.

There are some bus pass options on the page

where you can get on and off as you please which may work well. Otherwise some of them do tours although most I think, are more  budget  tours if they are for young people.

Some of the tours with these two companies look quite good and within your time frame.

  4. There are heaps of tour operators including myself. My tours though, start at 26 days minimum, and we still don't get to show our clients everything they should see.

    Google the internet.

  5. No. 7 days is NOT long enough. But neither is 14, in my honest opinion!

Astounding scenery. Amazing Island. Must go back again!
