  1. Too vague a question.

How do you drive? Around the city? In the country on B roads? On a motorway? Do you carry lugguge? Passengers?

All in all in cities, best cars are small cars. 1.2/1.4 will return 35 mpg roughly if driven well.

On the countryside B/A Roads a good sized diesel is best. a 1.8TDi or 2.0TDi are great as they can handle the rapid speed changes well yet still deliver over 40mpg. Motorway miles are absorbed by any car. I used to get 45mpg at 70 in my Peugeot 106 1.1 and 55mpg at 70 in my Renault Scenic 1.6. My Peugeot used to give me 50mpg in town and 45mpg in country roads. My Scenic was far different giving 35mpg in town and 40mpg on country roads.

My mother owns a TDCi 1.8 Ford Focus C-Max and it gives 55mpg on a motorway or 37mpg in town. Every car is different, every driver is different so you need to find what suits your style?

    Good luck.

  2. Here's the average UK fuel economy ratings:

    Urban -           23.502mp(US)g          (UK 28.225mpg)

    Extra Urban - 39.445mp(US)g          (UK 47.327mpg)

    Combined -    31.506mp(US)g         (UK 37.837mpg)

You should definitely look for a vehicle that can achieve in the region of 45+ mpg combined to save on petrol. The most efficient diesel and petrol vehicles are listed on the link below.

FYI The most efficient production car on Britain's roads is the petrol-electric powered Honda Insight Hybrid, which can achieve 83.1mpg combined.

  3. With today's gas prices you should be looking at 30 mpg or more highway, with a combined mpg rating of at least 25 mpg.

Staying at this or higher will give you more choices for cars, and not make you focus on one brand.  Just make sure you get a good warranty if you buy a brand that is not know for reliability (Toyota, Nissan, Honda).

  4. As far as cars go, performance reliability and provin to last you for hundreds of thousands of miles,if well maintained and get good gas mileage, Honda Toyota and Nissan compact car versions Honda Models Accord, Civics. Toyota models, Camry, Carolla. Nissan models, Altima Maxima ect. Hope this helps.

  5. MPG is only a part of the value of a car.  One could buy a crappy junky car with  great mileage.  So what?  That's like saying, "Do you walk to school or carry your lunch?"

  6. take the train
