  1. First, it really depends on what kind of racing you want to do.  That will determine what class boat you need to purchase, as in a race everyone uses the same type of boat.  Lasers are great little boats to race.  They are lightweight, fast, and easy to manage with one person.  There are also different classes of Laser racing.  I would suggest first trying one out before buying one if you can.  Or find if there are any Laser regattas near you, and hang out a bit around the racing scene and start chatting with the people involved to see if you it's something you want to get into.

  2. Sail Boat Racing...That should be a thrill...

  3. If you are beginning to sail, a Laser will be a lot of fun, and work to do it right.  But will be very rewarding in the end.

Is there a Laser sailing/racing group near you?  If so, they are generally very helpful in getting you started, and will help you learn to sail correctly.

I started small, and went up to 38'.  I still think that the smaller, the more fun in sailing.

  4. Lazers are fun- but if you really want to learn how to run a sailboat that has way to much sail and not enough ballast-get an "El Toro" ---This little class of sail boat will teach you real quick how to run a race boat. There are many regattas- it has a bit of a cult status with real devotees. Boat racers can be a bit- well competitive-to put it nicely. But it's a lot of fun -and the party after the race is great.--

About the boat.-It's 8' with a dagger board and a ton of single sail. Sounds simple? Don't be fooled. One person can load it on the roof of the car--well maybe not one of these"chicklet cars". Do a search for this class and see what you get. Most of all have fun.
