  1. Are you a beginner? Or have you been surfing for a long time?

If you're just starting out, I recommend starting on a longboard. You can move to a smaller board, or stick with longboarding; that's up to you. I personally learned on a longboard, but after going surfing two times, I switched to a shortboard. That's up to you.

But I'd say for you, start out with a 10'0 board.

Keep in mind: In addition to length, GENERALLY, the wider the board, the more stable it will be, and the thicker board, the more it will float you.

But let's say you've been surfing for a while and want to go shorter. Most shapers have some form of Big Guy Tris, meaning a performance shortboard for taller, heavier people. If you are looking for something like this, you can get a board that's 6'7 or 6'8. As far as specific width and thickness, do your homework and you will find a perfect board for yourself.

Shop around, go to your local surf shops, see what designs specific shapers have and can recommend to you. You can get away with going longer than your average board is made.

  2. i have the same dimensions as you, and i was riding a 6'0, but i found i was a bit undergunned on waves bigger than 6 foot and also i found it difficult to section waves becos the board didnt carry my weight nicely. so i recently upgraded to a 6'2, this is a really good board, i highly suggest go for a 6'2 for your dimensions.

  3. 10 feet

  4. if you've never surfed before, i suggest you use a longboard...something along the lines of 8 feet. if you're experienced, well, hey, just make sure you can balance your weight and get a board thats wide enough for you to evenly distribute your weight. im 5'9 and 130 pounds and i use a 6'4 "san francisco" short board. its all a matter of preference and if you know what you're doing. if you want a cheap board that will work really well, you can always go to www.hotbutteredsurf.com.br.  its a brasilian surf sight and i know the shaper...cool dude. their boards range anywhere between 150 dollars and 400 dollars depending on how much you wanna spend.

good luck, im sure you'll find what you're looking for.

  5. Dont get a 10 foot surfboard, that'd be like surfin on a front door. Dont buy a long board, but a short board that will suit your size. Your pretty tall. When you start surfing and you begin with a longboard, you will get trapped into always riding a longboard, and youll just be another Mal rider. Buy a short board, it will take you a bit longer to learn on it but good for you when you do, because it dont take much skill to ride on a Mal.

Go to your surfshop and let them measure you up and find a board that suits you. You arent very heavy for your height so it shouldnt be a problem.

Im 5'11 and I ride a 6 foot board and its fast as h**l. I will not ride anything over 6'4 because too much board in front of your feet is just a pain in the ***.

Worst comes to worst buy yourself a second hand 6'8 to 7 foot shortboard and get it really thick so its more bouyant than the newer type surfboards. Ive surfed for a long time, so I got an idea about what im talking about.

  6. dude, too general in question.

how long you been ridin?   where do you ride?   how often?  what are conditions most often where you ride?

i'm 5'11"   185 and ride an 8-foot Greg Noll v-bottom (circa 1968) most often.   but i also have a 6' 8" Hansen that works in smaller stuff.

  7. What kind of waves are your riding?  Big, small, medium?

What kind of surfing you want to do?  Short, long, bigwave, tow-in?

Longboard? 9' at the bare minimum, but you may be more comfortable at 9' 6" (try a 10' if you got the dough, easier to paddle, but more to handle).

Shortboard? 6'10" +  Generally, you don't want to be taller than your board, especially if you're just starting out.
