  1. Get a BZ board, they're fun, cheaper than fiberglass and much more forgiving if you're a beginner. If you don't have excellent board control, you pose a danger to yourself and other surfers in the lineup. Paddling out on a fiberglass board takes more skill and a lot more responsibility. Just make sure you're ready. When you are, pay less attention to brand, more to length, thickness, width and materials. Don't be afraid to talk to experienced surfers in the shop. Epoxy boards are a good choice.

  2. The long & short of it... top three I think to be the long lasting brands. But it all depends on how much abuse you duel out!

Longboards: Dewey Weber Surfboards @ deweyweber.com, robert august surfboards @  robertaugust.com, Joel Tuder @ Joeltudor.com

    Short Boards: Channel Island Surfboards @ almerrick.com, L0ST... Surfboards @ lostenterprises.com, Surftech @ surftech.com

  3. You sound like a kook (beginner).  Go with a softtop longboard (BZ, etc).  Depending on your weight, go 8' minimum (up to 130lbs) or 9' if you weight more than that.  10' if you're pushing 200lbs or more.  It will last for-ever, it won't require ding repair (which is expensive, not to mention that it is hella easy to ding any fiberglass board), they're reallly stable and easy to learn on and most important: you won't hurt anyone you hit with it.

If you MUST have a hard-shell surfboard, then get a Surftech epoxy longboard.  They have 'signature models' shaped by all the famous shapers.  They're expensive.  They're not indestructible.  But they're pretty tough - I've knocked one around  hard enough to destroy a normal fiberglass board and it came through unscathed.  Keep in mind that your level of responsibility with any kind of 'hard' board goes waaaay up though - you gotta keep it from hitting (and very possibly maiming or even killing) other people - and yourself - in all conditions.

  4. Yes!! Depending where you live, and how much you want to spend. If you get a name brand board you should be fine. Since you sound like a beginner, don't make the mistake of getting a pro style board. If you have been surfing less than a year you should be riding a long board. If you are starting out I would suggest a used board. Surfing is one of the most difficult sports to do well. even if you live on the beach it takes years to become an expert. Let me know if I can help.

  5. The laminents (logos) you see on the board don't really determine the life of your surfboard. The logo is basically the company that pays the shaper to shape the foam blank. The strength of the board depends more on the glassing of the board. Fiberglass is laminated by resin onto a shaped, foam blank. The weight of the fiberglass is one factor of the strength of the board. The skill of the glasser is another factor.

Bottom line, the company/person who laminates the fiberglass to the board is the main determining factor on the strength/integrity of the board.

  6. If you are a begginer start with a long board.Usually the more expensive ones last longer so you are better off getting an branded board from billabong or oneill which will last you a while
