I am looking to get a street bike within the next 3 months or so. I am a first timer but I have heard that as long as you respect the bikes power, which i plan on doing, you will be fine starting out on a 600cc. what im wondering is if it would be alright if i get a new bike or nearly new bike??

  1. I can't understand all this advice for getting a 500 or 600cc bike for your first one. Why not buy an older 250, get used to it and the people on the road then if you like it you can upgrade.

In Australia you can't ride anything higher than a 250 for a certain amount of time. I think that is a great idea.

  2. Honestly I have only ridden Gixxer 1000's and I'm a pretty decent rider, I can hold a balance point wheelie for about three miles, start on the bike you want to own for the rest of your life

  3. Sure, it would probably be alright, if you don't mind repairing your new bike often.  Here's what I mean...

I'd suggest not getting a new bike, nor even a near new bike.  Motorcycling is not for everyone, long term.  If you get a new, or almost new bike, you're going to pay alot for it, especially if you go to a dealer.  What if you don't dig it?  What if you slip and yank that throttle, and scare the c**p out of yourself?  It happens to guys all the time, nothing to be ashamed of.

The other reason, is that you WILL drop it over and over again.  You WILL crash it (how bad depends on you), and it's going to get beat up, so get all of that learning done and out of the way on a P.O.S. and save yourself a lot of money.

When you go a year solid without dropping or crashing the bike, you'll know you're ready to get something you can really enjoy.
