Question:

I am looking to get my "Z" card from the coast guard, also known as merchant mariners document?

I would like to go out on a tug boat this summer and work on the boat. They have all different applications on the website and I am not sure which one to do. I have also had a DWI with an accident in the past which I don't know if they will allow. So if anyone could help with the exact application I have to get and maybe some good companies in the New York area that I could go out on for a week would be great. Actually anything you can tell me would be a help since I am clueless

Thanx.

  1. Heres the link to the coast guard web site for merchant mariner documents

    http://uscg.mil/stcw/

From the Coast Guard Web Site:

You must document all convictions including DUI/DWI infractions, regardless of how old, regardless of the court in which convicted and regardless of whether or not the conviction has been expunged. Please be ready to submit documentation of any offenses in the form of court records, copies of legal proceedings, or evidence of rehabilitation upon request.

  2. Contact the nearest coast guard regional exam center to be evaluated.  You will need a physical, and a drug test. Apply for Ordinary Seaman. Also STCW basic safety training, depending on who you work for.

  3. Well there is the cost involved to which will be around $195 for your MMD. You will also need a TWIC card (Transportation Workers Identity Credential)  which is $132.00.

You want to go for a week? You want to work for the summer?

Someone might hire you in a pinch. They probably won't want to talk to you unless you have all your documentation already.

    Company's:

    Moran, http://www.morantug.com/

    McAllister, http://www.mcallistertowing.com/

    C and R, I don't have a web address for them

    Sea Wolf Maine, http://www.seawolfmarine.net/

The DWI you have raises concern. The Coast Guard will not look very favorably on any application that isn't 100% honest so list every little error in your ways, as they will find out!

I guess a deckhand in NYC waters would start around 35 to 40 thousand a year.
