I am looking to invest in a small business. I would prefer south west uk.?

Question

I have just been offered redundancy and a cheque of £35k.

I have been a factory worker for the last twenty years.

I would love to have a change in my life and i am thinking about taking the money.

I have no real ties in my life at present.

I would like to become an active partner in a small business.

Any ideas would be welcome.

If you have no experience of business, I'd be very wary of offering your cash to another business person.  I've seen too many partnerships fall apart when one puts the money in and the other takes it.

Have you thought about investing in property instead?  You could use the money as a 25% deposit for a buy 2 let mortgage and have a regular income from your investment.  Properties can be found at reasonable rates at present and there's a demand for rental.  That way, you keep control over your investment, you have an income from it and your initial investment will appreciate as soon as the market steadies again.

If you do invest in someone else's business, find a good accountant to check out why they need your investment, to calculate your likely return and then get a solicitor on board to draw up a legal agreeement that is fair for both parties.  Even if you find someone who's a friend or relative, it's still very important to do this.  Everything changes when money's involved.

Me and a friend have an idea, and we need £16k to get it started.  Its an Internet company.  We prepared a business plan and presented it to a bank.  The bank said "no" because we don't have £8k of our own money to put into it.

He helps to run his Dad's business.  My friend originated the idea.  He is reluctant to give away any equity in the business.  He is based in Southampton.  

I am a graduate with two degrees.  

What kind of a deal did you have in mind?
