I don't want to purchase something that has extra things I don't need. I am looking for something that has excellent sound and picture quality. Anyone got any recommendations?

  1. I'd suggest going to a couple of the big stores that have lots of brands on display.  You will notice that there are certain brands that definitely look better than others in the way of contrast and color reproduction.  Its not necessarily the most expensive, top of the line sets that look the best either.  Make a note of the brands that you find the best picture and features that you like and then do a little research for the best price.  Also, the eBay store below has a bunch of 37" LCD's to choose from and you might find what you are looking for there.

  2. I am a fan of lcd's over plasma's but if you get a bigger size you have to go plasma. For lcd's i would recommend aquos and LG. I have to laugh at whoever recommended sony. Yeah they are good but sony has fallen behind the competition in overall quality of products, especially for their prices, though sony always makes very attractive looking products that i would love to show off in my house (except home audio yuck!).  If you just want a tv for dvd's and such don't bother with 1080p stuff. Eventually it might be nice to have but till then prices will get cheaper for high def products.

In conclusion, just go to the store and do some visual testing of your own and see what models catch your eye in quality and style. Also you can go on amazon.com and look up tv's your interested in and compare specs, and customer reviews to get an effective idea of what you want.

  3. Honestly, there are a lot of good options, but if you're not too concerned with having the best "brand name", get a Vizio or an LG or something like that.  I have an LG, though it is a 42" Plasma, and my good friend has a 42" Vizio LCD.  They are both great TVs for everyday use.  I don't personally see the point in paying 3 times as much for something else.

  4. I just got a 42" LCD hdtv from Sams Club. It is a 1080i, Phillips, the best LCD you can get right now. It was $1200 after tax. I have been looking at LCD's for a little over a year. First, how much are you willing to spend? Go from there and stick to it. I suggest the 1080i (on a smaller screen like a 37", compared to mine, it looks amazing!!!!!) I love my tv. :)

  5. I would suggest a plasma for sporting events. LCDs, although they have gotten better, still suffer from motion blur. VHS won't look good on any hdtv but dvds do. If your h**l-bent on LCD, go with a sharp aquos or Toshiba. You'll want the fastest response time you can find (6ms or less) and the highest contrast ratio. If you decide on plasma, Pioneer and Panasonic are the better mainstream brands.

  6. I really suggest upgrading to a progressive dvd player or better yet a Blu-ray player. It will still play all of your dvds and even upconverts them.. The video quality will blow your mind.

Now as far as tvs go, i suggest either the Sharp LC-37D90U

(this is what Cnet had to say about it... "Sharp's LC-37D90U is too small to take full advantage of its high 1080p resolution, but it's still one of the best-performing LCDs we've tested yet.")

    Or the Samsung LN-T3253H

(Cnets rating 7.6 "Great style, oodles of features, and a solid picture combine to make the Samsung LN-T3253H one of the best LCD TVs available at its size").

Try to compare, dont drive yourself crazy.. Just pick the one that you like the most visibly and that has all the features you need.

  7. Sony Bravia is about the best you can buy, but it's expensive.  Try VIZIO.  My boyfriend bought 42" and 52" ones from them, and they're cheap and have a great picture.
