Try looking on e bay.  At this stage people are eager to fill up spaces which are still available and they go cheap.  I got my accomdation lastyear on e bay for next to nothing.

i dont know what you consider to be cheap since july/august is prime tourist season.  but check this site out http://www.villavacations.com/  we used them when we went this past march.  we stayed at L'Ulivo in Umbria and the host family was wonderful!  we were very happy with the accomodations instead of staying in hotels.  plus, the site has some good travel itineraries for different parts of italy.
