  1. I think that they should match but like symmetry. You can use complimentary fabrics in other ways (like seat covers etc) but I feel that it's too much if windows aren't uniform. It can be done, but it's hard to get it to look right.

    Just my two cents :)

  2. I used the same materials, but in different ways.  In the breakfast area there are windows that cover nearly the entire wall.  That wall is red brick.  On those windows I used a wide rod and made a basically simple valance...it has the casing so it gathers onto the rod...I used a stripe (hunter green and white).  The second material is a plaid (hunter green and burgundy).  I made a 2 inch band of the plaid, cut  on the bias, sewn just under the bottom seam of the casing.  I trimmed the bottom of the valance in a green scalloped trim.  Under that valance I have blinds that will lower from the top, so the bottom of the window is covered by blind, with an open area to let light in between it and the valance.  This affords us privacy, since the windows there go to about 2 and a half feet above the floor.

The rest of the walls I have wallpapered...they are hunter green with fruit, and white cabinets.  So, I did not want to use green stripe there.  For the window over the sink I made a cornice-like valance (that is it is flat, not gathered, onto the 2 inch wide rod) of the same stripe material...but in burgundy.  I cut the bottom of the valance in deep scallops, and finished the scalloped edge with lipped cording of burgundy and green. (the lip is sewn in between the lining and the outer fabric so when turned right side out the 1/2 inch cording runs along the scalloped edge)

The third window is one that is between the sink and the breakfast area, and on a wallpapered wall of hunter green with fruit.  On that window I made the cornice valance like the one over the sink.  I made cafe panels to go below it.  The cafe panels have the plaid trim on the bias at the top of the casing, a narrow 1/4 inch thick cord of hunter and burgundy.  Below that is the striped burgundy material for the body of it.  At the bottom is a  4 inch wide panel of the plaid on the bias below the striped area.  I used the same type scalloped trim for the bottom of the panels...in burgundy, and used a smaller diameter burgundy and green cording between the burgundy stripe and plaid.  All of the valances and the cafe panels are lined in white batiste.

I love how it looks...the only thing is, using the trims means I cannot wash the curtains...they have to be dry cleaned so the trims don't run!
