  1. You count route the names. Place a dark stain on the wood, let dry then sand. The letters will now be darker than the rest of the wood. Put a sealer or lighter stain over the sanded portion.

  2. 1) Spray on some clear lacquer to use a as a sealer.

    2) Spray on a bit of black lacquer to the routed letters and let it dry.

    3) Sand the foreground, leaving paint only in the letters.

    4) Apply a clear lacquer to everything.

  3. Choose what color of stain you want.  Get an old rag and rub it on.  The longer you leave it on the darker and deeper the color gets.  You can paint the names in black or any other color you want if you want them to stand out more.

  4. with  light colored wood that is easy stain-able you can use a very light [even white] stain and stain the letters. then after the stain is dried  put painter tape on the letters and stain the back ground. however this is very formal and not very child attractive.

When the wood is less stain-able or dark then what about a light colored paints for the letters and then after drying and taping the letters use some  dark color rabbit silhouettes patterns for the back ground,

When all the staining and/or painting has dried put a nice coat of lacquer.
