Uxmal and Chichen Itza are near each other and I would like to do one of them. I can walk up stairs but it is difficult and can be painful.

  1. Uxmal is not in Progresso.Uxmal is at least 2 hours by car from Progresso.Chichen Itza is a different direction but still about 2 hours by car from Progresso which is a beach community and a port for cruise ships. Uxmal is in a portion of the state many miles from Progresso that is more jungle in nature.

'Near' is of course a realitive term but Uxmal and Chichen Itza are not what I would call near to each other. There are also several other smaller archelogical sites within the state of Yucatan. All of the Mayan pyramid type structures at the various sites are extremely steep and can be difficult to climb.I have included a map link that should help you visualize the area as well as some links with photos to give you an idea of the staircases on the Pyramids

  2. If you have trouble climbing stairs, you'll have trouble climbing the steps. There are no handicap-access ramps OR rails at any of those ruins.

  3. I am afraid, it would be difficult to climb any Pyramid of Uxmal and Chichen. But still if you can walk slowly some stairs you will make it. Because it is worth to see these places. Eventough Uxmal is not at Progreso is near to Merida, about 1.30 hrs. and Chichenitza is from Merida 3 hours at least. I hope you can do it.
