I am moving to Ireland. Does anyone know Ireland closer?

Hello! I am moving to Ireland for one year. I am so afraid because I have never been to Ireland before. What about the people? Are they friendly and helpful and patient? I have never met an Irish person before? I am going to Ireland to make experiences abroad and to brush up my English. But I am so afraid of Irish people.

What are you afraid of ,Irish people are no different to any other nation.As with any country you are visiting the same rules apply.We are very friendly and welcoming. know who you are coming too ,and you'll be fine .Come and enjoy your stay there is nothing to be afraid of .I live here .

I'm English and my boyfriend is Irish and we spent 2 1/2 months there last Dec-this Feb and this week we're going back for another 2 months!

I love Ireland so much!  I would live there if I could afford it!!

The people are great, as is much of their lifestyle.  As someone said, their road network is rubbish, really slow with very few major motorways (although they are building them at the moment) but the train links are fine, as are their flights.

Ireland is so beautiful, and a bit warmer than Scotland (where I lived for the past 9 years) - the Gulf Stream gives it a much more temperate climate.

I laughed when  I read you were 'so afraid of Irish people' - they are the friendliest people in the world!  They are a very cultured, comedy loving nation.  

I urge you to watch the Channel 4 sitcom 'Father Ted' before you go (you can find it on dvd on www.amazon.co.uk - there is more truth to it than you might think, but any nation that is prepared to write and support a sitcom that does nothing but take the mickey out of its country, people, customs and religion has to be worth a visit!

Go to Ireland, embrace it with open arms and it will embrace you back.

They are very warm and welcoming.

Be sure to bring warm clothing, and don't be afraid to ask people for help on directions, advice. It's what they're best at.

I've made two long trips there. Friends we made there are coming out to see us in the US for their second time.

How can you be afraid of people who say:

"May you always have walls for the winds,

a roof for the rain, tea beside the fire,

laughter to cheer you, those you love near you,

and all your heart might desire."

heya I'm Irish and we're lovely people so dont be afraid! like in any other country, there are people who are not so nice but there are also some of the kindest people here. in general, Irish people are very welcoming and friendly. you're going to have an amazing year so don't worry! :D

All my family are Irish..(I'm a 1st gen. Scot) and I go over to Ireland every year.

The people there are VERY welcoming and friendly and they are sooooo laid back that nothing is too much trouble. Also they have a wee saying where my lot are from:

Why do something today that you can put off 'til tomorrow."

that kinda sums them up.

You'll love visiting and working in Ireland...Dublin is expensive to live in...their road sytems are terrible but their rail networks are pretty good so it's easy to get from A to B relatively easy.

I wish you well on your travels and trust me...You have nothing to fear or worry about.

Hello, my new friend,

                                   I hope you get to meet me and my family when you get here, and we will soon dispel any discomfort you feel about us people in Ireland, this is my home and my house is always open to friends old, and particularly new ones. I can't know why you should be apprehensive about coming to my Country, it's the most peaceful place in Europe, and here in County Galway, you are going to be made so very welcome, you would be like one of the family in less than a heart-beat, you will need to bring with you some articles of warm clothing and at least a waterproof jacket too, we are known fo our 'Soft Days' here  Rain and a bit of overnight damp too, depending on the season. although we speak Irish, we also speak English too. everywhere. please do not be afraid, we none of us have been known ever to bite anyone who is a stranger in our land, and remember, you may be able to teach us a thing or two about your own country. We are always ready to listen and have fun too, not at your cost or expense. but to show you that we do like to have a bit of the 'craic' ( fun ) pronounced crack!, all the road signs are in English with the distances marked in Kilometres, and if you stray from your chosen path, ask one of us, and we will tell you how to find your way about and put you back on the right road again.

               From your enquiring letter it seems like you already have a good grasp of the English language, so with that in mind, don't forget to have some fun too during your stay with us, we really are a nice and friendly people, and love to meet strangers, after all, we have a saying here in Ireland, that 'A stranger is a friend you have not met yet' and there are a lot of friends for you to meet here.

              The food too is a very varied menu, and contains a lot of domestically grown products, and you always have the healthy options at your table, but if you eat Irish food you are going to really enjoy most of it, we probably all eat the same food as you do in your own country. so no change there for you to think about. yes we are a patient race of people especially with those from other shores, and for all the reasons you are coming here for a year, you will not want to leave us, without you having had one of the most wonderful years in your lifetime, come and join in with our way of life and enjoy all we have on offer, and just to reiterate a little, if you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes, it might get better, and if it gets worse, wait a little longer, it's bound to cheer up and put a sunny smile on your face. What are you afraid of - providing you are pleasant people will be pleasant back. BUT as everywhere there will be the odd nasty person and you just deal with them in the a=same way as you do back home

I'm Irish too, most of us welcome everyone and anyone...there is good and bad people everywhere but we are very accepting of other cultures, there is so many people that aren't originally from ireland living here.

My cousins have been to Ireland, most of the people are very friendly, so don't worry, just enjoy your time there.
