Is there a particular neighbor that would be better to rent in? What neighborhoods should I avoid - that are unsafe? Single female living alone. Thank you.

  1. I suggest looking at downtown Raleigh.  You can live in a nice apartment that's within walking distance of tons of things (restaurants, stores, etc).  Then you'd have to drive less and use less gas.  It's great!

  2. Do you have a job already?  I don't want to tell you to move to Cary or Holly Springs if your job is going to be in Wake Forest or Zebulon.

I can tell you that you don't want to look at houses or apartments in Southeast Raleigh.  Cary is usually much more expensive than Raleigh, but most parts of Cary are safe for a single woman.  Garner is another small town just south of Raleigh.  It's much less expensive that Raleigh or Cary and has some safe areas and some not-so-safe areas.

My daughter and her husband live in Zebulon, a small town east of Raleigh.  They're in a new housing development that is very nice and very safe, and the housing prices are much lower than what you'll find in Raleigh or Cary.

Wake Forest is a city north of Raleigh.  Very cute city, lots of old neighborhoods and new construction.  Some of it's fairly expensive.  Seems to be mostly safe.

Much of north Raleigh (north of the Beltline, going north on Creedmore, Six Forks, or Falls of the Neuse Roads) is reasonably safe for single women.  When you start out Capital Blvd and get to the Mini-City area (Millbrook Road and Capital Blvd/US 1 North), there are a lot of apartments that aren't especially safe any longer.

I've lived in Raleigh nearly 25 years and I love it here.  There are a lot of places in town where you will be safe, and a few where you won't.

Hope you love chopped barbecue.  And be sure you look for Goodberry's.  Their homemade vanilla custard is heaven on earth.

  3. Check out Brier Creek.  It is a very good area and has a lot of shopping and stuff around.  It is really close to the airport as well!  I lived there when i first moved down here 2 years ago and really liked it.  Guess it depends on how much you want to pay cause it is a little more expensive there.  Here is where I stayed...
