What type of paperwork should I have outside of the lease in order to get my utilites turned on?

  1. In most cases if you are a tenant then there is not much you have to do. The landlord has most of the utilities already made but some may request that you ave the bill sent directly to you instead of through the landlord. In that case you would need your identification and your lease to prove that u are entitled to the utilities. Apart from that basically nothing.


  2. Different utility companies are different.

    I would save a copy of your previous bills (even if they're out of state) because some require you to have references. Some will require you to pay a hefty deposit to turn on the service. Some will wave a deposit if they can draft your checking account directly for your bill. Just be prepared for everything.

    I would also have a local checking account set us asap.
