  1. you might do better by selling all of your stuff and then buying again once you get to HI.  i know it's not what you want to do, but with the price of shipping, you may be backed into a corner.  this is one of the major drawbacks to living OCONUS (outside of the Continental US).  I spent 2 years OCONUS when i was in the military.  a lot of my belongings, that were not sentimental, had to be sold before i moved.  the military will only send so much (weight-wise).  and if you max out that weight you have to pay out of pocket.  I'm sorry that this is the situation you are facing... but the reality of the situation is that it is not cheap to ship your personal belongings.  you need to decide if it is worth it to have it shipped or if it is worth it to just sell and repurchase.  i think you'll find that it is cheaper to sell and just repurchase your belongings once you reach your new home.
