  1. 1/8 + 1/16 = 3/16 native american

    I don't know about the history or resources you could find.

  2. Father's Side:

    Great Grandfather = 4/4 (full "Blackfoot")

    Grandparent = 1/2

    Your Father = 1/4

    You = 1/8

    Mother's Side:

    Great Great Grandmother = 4/4 (full "Native American")

    Great Grandparent = 1/2

    Grandparent = 1/4

    Your Mother = 1/8

    You = 1/16

    Father's Side + Mother's Side = 3/16

    Now, you could contact the BlackfEET Tribe of Montana to see if they have information on your paternal great grandfather.  However, you said BlackfOOT.  In my experience with over 2000 claims of American Indian ancestry, people who claim BlackfOOT usually have no connection to Montana but are, instead from the eastern parts of the US, typically the southeast.  If this is you, contacting the BlackfEET Tribe of Montana would be fruitless.  You also need to find out which tribe your maternal great great grandmother descends from.  If you know where in the country she was from, it might help you determine which tribe she might have descended from.  If she was from Florida, look at the Florida tribes, if she was from Maine, look at the Maine tribes.

  3. What you would want to do is make sure that you don't have any other Native American relatives in your family tree, if you do they could increase your percentage. Then just follow the tree down.

    If one parent out of the two is Native American, their children would be 50% Native American. Each Generation after that would lose half of the percentage they are unless they breed with Native American.

    Example:

    Both parents are Native American, the child will be 100% Native American. If one parent is 100% Native American and the other is 100% Not Native American, the child will be 50% Native American. If one parent is 50% Native American, and the other is 100% Not Native American, the child will be 25% Native American. Etc. :-)

  4. I would first go to the tribe for information. The Blackfeet Indian Reservation or Blackfeet Nation is an Indian reservation of the Blackfeet tribe in Montana in the United States.

  5. To add, there is also a Blackfoot tribe within the Lakota ('Sioux') Nation. (Not related to the Blackfeet Nation in Montana.)

    So if your search takes you away from Montana, that is another possible one to look into.

    You start your search like anyone, and the above is one of numerous tutorials on how to do this.  You do work with family members who are living, but the general focus of research is NOT always based in what people remember. You need to get used to using records and documents, to verify everything. The further back you go, the more those documents will open up.

    For the moment, set aside the idea that you are looking for Native American proof.  You FIRST have to have names, dates and places, regardless of what they may have been. Once you DO have those identities, you have something to search other records WITH.  It will also be important to know just where they did actually live.

    The census is a major part of your research, but that has to be persons born prior to 1930.  Once you are into those, and other records, it will show if they had documents to support your family tradition. Some will not show it.. because they choose to conceal or deny it. And sometimes, it will be truth, that they were not.

    Take a bit of time to read through the guide, so you can start collecting what you need.

  7. Great grandfather = 1/8 of ancestry

    Great, great grandmother = 1/16 of ancestry

    Did they/are they not teaching you how to add fractions in middle school?

    1/8 is equivalent to 2/16.  With the common denominator, you can add 2/16 and 1/16 to get 3/16.

    Since 3/16 can't be simplified further fractionally, you have to convert into decimal format.

    3 divided by 16 = .1875 = 18.75%

    You're 18.75% i***n, that you know of. You could have more.  I believe that's enough to start claiming victimhood minority status in the U.S. as a Native American and sucking untold resources out of the government like a vulture, so hop on it.
