I love my team and my coach. We are going to Nationals in June and next weekend we are going to Chicago and I think I will be terrified!!! What should I do???

Also I am the setter, and if you are the setter on a vball team you know how much pressure there is on you.!!!

  1. Im a setter too, and i get nervous all the time. Just relax! Most of the time u will just be so terrified up untill the first point, and then the nerves go away. I cure my butterflies by assuring the OTHER teamates that we will do great, and that usually calms me down. Good luck at nationals, and remember...u are the setter, a person who is known as the "team leader", if u happen to mess up dont worry about it, u play as a team!

  2. I played volleyball at a very competitive level for 23 years in total. Never was I not nervous before a game. Just remember you are human and as such can only do the best you can. I played setter, spiker and middle blocker over my career. The key to you doing well is getting the ball from the back court in playable form. Just do your job and don't over think your job set those balls and let the hitters nail them. Keep an eye on the other team so you'll be able to set away from their best blockers. You are there obviously because you are capable. Coaches have a habit of knowing that.

  3. Despite what everyone thinks, volleyball is not life.  It is still just a game.

Try to relax.  Breathe.  Hopefully once you get your first set done, your natural talent will take over.  A little nervous is a good thing.  That means adrenaline is flowing.  Too many nerves and you will be tight and set like me.  (I was a setter.  But that was YEARS ago.  Hands are not the same.)

Instead of being afraid or nervous, decide that you WANT the ball.  You also want to play to win.  Do not play to not lose.  (I was coaching a team at adult nationals.  They were 5-1 in the deciding sets.  They played to win.  We played in one match.  The other team had 6 match points.  We won all of those.  The first time we had match point, they hit a soft roll shot that we used a free ball pass and hit for the winner.  The other team was afraid to lose.

I will not be officiating at Nationals this summer.  I am a National referee and scorekeeper.  And believe it or not, we usually get nervous too.  I am nervous until I make my first call.  Once I get into the flow of the match, I am not nervous.  You will do the same.  All of the millions of reps will kick in and you will forget that you WERE nervous.

Good luck and have a GREAT time.

  4. I am going to Nationals in June too!!!! Good luck! No pressure, just have fun.

  5. I know there is a lot of pressure on you. Since you are the setter it's important to the whole team but just consintrate on having fun and beating the other team and you'll do fine. hope you do good on your game.
