  1. Your best bet is to go to Antwerp, since there are many Indians living there. There are quite a few shops here, including Oriental, Verma supermarket, etc. etc.

  2. Bruxelles has an excellent YELLOW PAGES telephone directory... I used it all the time when I live there... and you can easily find Indian stores.  You can also stop in that small galerie just off the Northwest entrance to the Grand Platz.  A lot of those shop keepers are Indian and can give you some names of stores.

There is also an excellent open market in front of the church (Ste. Michelle I think) to the SOUTH of the Grand Platz about 10 blocks as well as many other saturday and sunday markets around the city.

  3. Namaste Jee,

    1) Indian Embassy

I few years back I was also looking for some grocery stores and I just phoned the Commercial Attaché of the Indian Embassy who very nicely referred me to a shop in the neighbourhood called < quartier du Châtelain> (15 minutes walk from the Indian Embassy). I don't know if this grocery store still exists but, if I were you, I would phone the Embassy to get updated info on where to go to get the biggest and best choice of shops.

    2)Grocery stores

OOps !I just remembered that, near the Place de la Petite Suisse, in Ixelles, I think the street is called "Chaussée de Boendael" (or one parallel to it) there are a few Indian/Pakistani restaurants and grocery stores there. They are behind the university, in between le Boulevard Général Jacques and la Place de la Petite Suisse.

    3) Local market

Also, on Sunday morning, there is this huge open market selling lots of produce from the Mediterranean and North Africa. You can get veggies and fruit for half the price compared to the local stores or chains. Prices are advertised but you can also bargain in this market.

They do sell the same veggies as used - at least, a lot of them - in India e.g. eggplant, lady fingers, mustard leaves, chilies, ginger, etc...even mooli and lots of spices. Check it out but mind the pickpockets as this is a very colourful and crowded market. You have to go around and compare the prices though and check the freshness of the produce. Some have great stuff, some others haven't.

Make it a family outing :-).

This market is called "Le Marché du Midi" because it is situated right next (even under) the railway station called "La gare du Midi". The market closes officially around 1 or 2 pm and, around that time, you can enjoy great bargains but...not always the freshness.

This market is a real treasure throve.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

    Hope this helps.
