First, call up a local daycare and ask them how much it costs.  Generally they will quote you a per hour rate or a per day (or per week) rate.  Whatever price they quote, divide that by the number of hours it's good for to determine their cost per hour.

Now, you need to charge some amount less than them.  If you do just a few hours at a time, charger a higher rate.  If you get a deal to do babysitting on a regular basis, give them a lower (discounted) rate because they will be using more of your services.

Generally speaking, $2.50/hour per kid is acceptable.  However, if it's only one kid, charge at least $5/hour.  Your minimum should be 3 hours per session to get at least $15 each time you babysit.
