I am 6'2" 240 lbs and looking to ride 5 miles each way everyday. I don't want to spend more than $350 to start out. What would be good bikes for me to look to buying?

  1. you will have to buy used or a HUFFY good luck/how slow do you want to go?

  2. Do you want a road bike, mountain  bike, fitness bike, comfort bike ?

Kind of asking what shoes should I get because I want to do some walking ?

Walking is not that exact, if I worked in a factory and did a lot of walking I would not go golfing or walk along the beach or walk through the woods in those same shoes.

    Biking is like that.

Your height and weight does not determine what kind of bike you need either.  What is important is that the bike fits you. Check this link  to help determine the size you need, it will get you close but is not as good as a fitting at a bike shop.

You will not get a bike that will fit you from any of the big box stores.  You need to go to a bike shop and see what they have.  Once you find what you like you can buy a new one or look for the same thing used in the correct size.

  3. sounds like you're going to be a commuter.  You can use any type of bike you want for commuting.  Avoid cheap bikes with cheap suspension systems, they drain your energy.  Avoid dirt tires if you are riding on the road.  I'd check out a bicycle shop, tell them you're looking to start commuting by bike, and they'll be happy to help.  I'm sure you can find a comfort or hybrid bike in your range.

  4. Check out the Mercier Kilo TT or the Shwinn Cutter fixies. They are both around $300, but I think the Cutter (named after the Cutters team from the movie "breaking away") is not on the market yet.

Fixed gear bikes (fixies) are road bikes with special rear hubs that are used on track racing bikes. They don't coast, and have only one gear.

Fixed gear bikes are great for city streets, and are the bike of choice for big-city bike messengers. They are cheap, extremely simple, easy to repair, and are great for training and getting in shape.

Fixies are not like your average bike though. They do not coast, ( you cant stop pedaling) and have no gears to shift to, but these are advantages if you are in a city with flat terrain. You can balance at stoplights/signs because the gears are fixed. They are good for training because they force you to pedal in a smooth circular motion and you can't just be lazy and switch gears.

They are very fun bikes and I recommend that you look into them.
