Question:

I am new to keeping fish, and I want an angelfish but I'm not sure it will work?

I have a 45 gallon fish tank. I am rather new to fish keeping but I read about the nitrogen cycle and I cycled my tank with 4 platies. The tank has about a week to two weeks left (I'm estimating), and I want to know if I can keep angel fish with platies and if so- would it be best to keep just one or several angels. I know angelfish can eventually get pretty large..but I'm not sure exactly what would go good with them. My tank is about 4 feet long and 18 inches tall. If you have other suggestions for a 45 gallon tank, then please do tell me. Thanks very much!

  1. Angelfish are fine with platies and most other peaceful community fish.

How many you get depends on how many other fish you plan to add.

If you want a variety of fish in your tank, I would suggest sticking with a single Angel.

If you prefer the focus of the tank be the Angels, go for 2 females or a proven pair, and you should be fine. Just remember that 2 Angels will drastically limit the amount of other fish you can add.

Be sure your tank is well cycled before adding them.

  2. A pair of Angels (preferably a male and female that would cooperate, though 2 females would work-- unfortunatley, sexing is nearly impossible, so you may need to start with several juveniles and seperate them as they pair off) would be fine in your tank with the Platties once the cycle finishes, BUT as soon as you add Angels, the increase in bioload will lead to an ammonia spike.  At this point, you will have to closely watch the parameters and change the water as needed.

  3. I love angel fish.  I put two of them in a 20 gallon and they're doing fine.  I put 2 more in a 30 gallon with about 8 guppies.  It's a pretty tank and they get a long well.  Everyone is growing and doing well.

  4. SOOP IS RIGHT WITH THE ANGELS. um u can always try to look carefully when buying them and see if any has already started to pair off. they do that all the time at my store. am i GLAD to see that u r doing the research and doing well. give u props. cuz my tanks were not going that smoothily when i first started 5 yrs ago. lol

once u have purchased the angels, make sure to have PLENTY of places for the platies to hide. i found out recently that mine is being a punk to my platies and had to add some additional hiding places for them.

angels are great fish and hope that they do well in ur tank.
