I am new to spinning wool and am looking at purchasing a Kromski Minstrel. Is it a good wheel for a newbie?

I am a long time spinner and own two Lendrums and a Merlin Tree wheel, as well as a Kromski Prelude purchased for my youngest grandchild (almost 4).  I bought the Prelude because it was easier for her to treadle than any of my others, including my Hitchiker which is more her size than my others.  Most new spinners who buy Kromski wheels are very happy with them.  However, that said, since a wheel can be a major purchase I would strongly suggest that if you have the opportunity to go to a vendor who sells several different types wheels from different makers and can try them out, do so.  If there is an upcoming sheep and wool festival in your area (even if, with the price of gas, it's a couple of hours away) there will be many wheel vendors there.  Sitting down and trying a wheel is the best way to find the one that you want to buy.  While many spinning guilds are on hiatus for the summer now, again, if you can find a guild meeting nearby go and ask members if they will allow you to try their wheels out.  Many will and this will give  you a better idea which way you are prepared to spend your money.

My first wheel, btw, was an Ashford wheel, it was not successful for me, so it did not stay with me long, but my first Lendrum has been with me for 11 years now.  Why two of them?  Hubby spins too <G>.

I have an Ashford Traveler. I love it. Just make sure you try it out. That's the best way to see if it is right for you. Some people told me that the Ashford Traveler was not good for me, and they were wrong. It just wasn't good for them. It all depends on what you are looking for.

The Minstrel is a good wheel, but not for everyone.
