  1. never heard of surface surfboards, i am sponsored by Patterson surfboards, so i think they are the best

  2. I've never heard of Surface. Maybe it's a small offshoot of a larger company. Major brands include: Billabong, Quiksilver, O'Neill, Volcom, and Rusty.

Some major shapers and board brands: Al Merrick - Channel Islands Surfboards, Jason Stevenson - JS Surfboards, Wade Tokoro - Local Motion.

As for who makes the best boards I wouldn't really worry it right now if you're new to surfing. Opinions will vary and you'll need to rent boards and see what works for you.

Try to buy used so if it doesn't work out you haven't spent too much cash. Don't buy until you have some experience though and have a better idea of what you really need and want.

In general, all major brands are considered good enough. Pick up Transworld Surf or Surfer Mag and read their reviews. Prowl the forums at Surfline and at Surfer Mag.

  3. Surface is a brand that makes soft-top surfboards for beginners. If you are a beginner, I would suggest that you don't worry about brand name surfboards and start with the Surface board. The best known shaper in the world, if anybody knows what they are talking about, is Wade Tokoro from Hawaii. Also for guns, Kerry Tokoro... Wade's brother. I have tried them all and nothing compares!

  4. The best thing to do is read reviews of surfboards by real surfers and then talk to the shaper.

You can read surfer feedback here on Todd Proctor's boards. He has been shaping for 15 years and specializes in worldwide custom surfboards. When you order a board from him, he will take the time to detail the board with you and to specify what board would be best for your level of experience, height, weight, where you surf, etc.

    Todd Proctor's mission statement:

My #1 goal is to work with surfers who are serious about getting the board that will take them to the next level. I offer highest quality design and craftsmanship, my personal attention, innovative technology, integrity, a fair price and quick turnaround.

Typically most companies reserve this type of service only for the “pros” and “elite” few. I enjoy making boards for many of the world’s most talented surfers; their feedback pushes me as a designer to shape boards that respond to the highest demands of performance surfing - I bring that same level of quality and attention to you . . . the individual surfer who wants the magic board.

Remember – the best surfers in the world are the ones having the most fun!

It’s your board . . . talk to the shaper.

  5. I wouldn't go with a Surface surfboard.  Once you get proficient at catching waves and standing up, you'll have outgrown the board.  I like fishes and I think 9:Fish Surfboards makes the best fishes out there (that's all they do, so it's their specialty).  The fish shape that 9:Fish has makes it really easy to paddle and catch waves without having to ride a big longboard.  This allows you to progress much faster and have a lot more maneuverability.  Plus their prices are very reasonable.  They currently do a lot of collaboration with one of the first fish shapers out there, Clyde Beatty.  He even glasses some of their boards.  Take a look at http://www.9fishsurf.com/reviews.html for customer reviews.  You'll see feedback from beginners to former pro's.

  6. Erie makes good boards.
