  1. You need Microsoft Word '07.

I believe you can also use OpenOffice, but I'm not sure.

  2. Download Microsoft compatibility pack for your version of office you have. This will enable you to open docx extension files. (click the link)

  3. The converter is available here...

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/H...

Download from Microsoft and convert .docx to .doc files

You can also check out the site

    http://www.docx2doc.com/

    for other covnerting options

  4. .docx is what MS is using to replace the .doc format in Microsoft Word versions prior to the Office 2007 release.  They've moved to an XML format and the files are smaller than the previous .doc files (why anyone care about a few kilobytes when we have Terabyte drives now... who knows).

    You have 3 options:

    1)  If you already have MS Office, you can download a compatibility pack that will allow previous version of MS Office to read the 2007 formats - xlsx, docs, etc.  After installing that, you can just open the file in Word as usual.  Here's the link to download the pack:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...

    2)  You can get OpenOffice.  This is a completely free office suite offered by Sun Microsystems (makers of Java) - rumor is they put it out because MS found a legal loophole way to copy the Java language into their own.  OpenOffice 3.0 is still in beta, but I'm using it.  Not perfect yet, but still usable.  I would recommend download the beta 2 version of OpenOffice 3.0.  You can get that at http://www.openoffice.org

    3)  The last option if you can't get anything else - contact the person who created the file, ask them to open the file, click on the button in the top right of the Word window that pops up - under the Save As... category he can choose to save the file in Office 2003 format which will create a .doc file you can read easily with just about any office suite - OpenOffice, MS Office, Star Office, etc

    Good Luck!

  5. you need Office 2007 - the newer versions of OpenOffice can open some .docx files.

you can also download READERS from Microsoft.

  6. .docx is the extension for microsoft word 2007, so you would need that or openoffice
