I am not getting ahead in my career because my boss needs me in my current position? What to do?

I want a different job in my company. A less qualified colleague was favored because my boss could not spare me at my current position. This was a job I had previously applied for.

I am qualified for this job but my boss fears making that choice, I strive for excellence and hope it is noticed (I think it is) but it is frustrating.

What would you do? I really do like my company!

  1. Talk to your boss about opportunities for future advancement in the company.  Let him/her know how much advancement and excellence mean to you and try and gage his/her position on advancing your career (don't mention the job you are talking about now -- make it general so it doesn't look like sour grapes).  Your boss may be oblivious to how much you want to advance.  A good boss will help you with your career development if they know that is your desire.

Depending on how that goes (or if you decide that you don't want to have that talk), it may very well be time to start looking for work elsewhere.  Keep your current job but start applying for positions at other companies.  If promotions and recognition is what you want, you won't be satisfied at your current company if you know it'll never happen.

  2. Well, if this job is better paying with more responsibilities, then it sounds like your boss made the wrong choice. However, if keeping you in your current position and moving the less qualified person to this other position is best for the productivity for the company, then your boss did what he had to do. It's his job to make sure that everything runs to its max potential, no matter what. Keep pushing it.
