We can control some things about our appearance: Our grooming, cleanliness, weight, and wardrobe. Other things we cannot. But I can tell you that if a person develops the attributes that make people like to be around them their appearance will matter less.

My best friend (next to my husband) has suffered his entire life with really severe acne. I didn't know him in high school but he had it then and has the scarring now, as well as occasional break-outs. (He is 26). I didn't think he was very good looking (I am married to a very hansome man) but as we became friends and he became a good friend, his face became dear to me as any good friend's invariably will. Now I think he is cute, bordering on hansome.

Do what you must to look your best:

-Get a good haircut that is appropriate for your bone structure and that you can manage yourself.

-If you wear glasses make sure they are flattering to your face shape.

-Be immaculately clean: body, hair, teeth, ears, fingernails, etc.

-Dress in clean attractive clothes.

And on a personal level:

-Look for someone to share your interests with first. Perhaps it will lead to romance.

-It is easy, when you are looking for love,to sometimes come off as needy. This will send a girl running.

-Know how to handle yourself in public: how to enter a restaurant with a date (she follows the waitress, you follow her), how to order, how to use good table manners, to be pleasant at the table, how to pay the bill and tip.

-Those who are interesting are interested. Pursue different interests so you are well rounded and not one sided (for instance,only knowing computers and gaming.)

-Stand up straight. This gives you presence and makes you look confident.

-Don't say negative things about other people.

-Cultivate a positive way at looking at things. This comes through and is attractive. Some people are negative and suck the life out of those around them. They drive people away.

-Have a sense of humor that is not cruel to others. Having fun at someone else's expense is never acceptable.

-Actually listen to what the other person is saying rather than just waiting for them to shut up so you can get your words in.

-Be a gentleman.

You sound like you could use some confidence. You gain confidence by accomplishing things little by little. Make yourself the type of person you would like to be around and you will find the type of person you want.

And poor is not a permanent condition. Changing that is in your power also.
