I live in Ontario Canada and I am not quite sure if I am married, we went to city hall in November 2005 and signed and everything with witnesses but I never registered for a marriage certificate or anything, in fact I lost all the papers that were given to me. now it is almost 3 years and I am not even sure if we are legally married or not, does anybody know the laws about this sort of thing.

  1. I believe the marriage certificate is just paper and doesn't mean anything. You don't have to register to be legally married. You have signed everything with witnesses so I think you are married! Do so more research and call the court or something to find out 100%.

  2. You can go back (or phone or write) the city hall and they can give you that information. If you need a copy of your marriage, then you can get that from the court house.

  3. I'm not sure about Canada , but in the states you and your husband have to say I DO before a cleric or a justice of the peace before you are married. Did you do this?

  4. You might want to call the place you were married at and find out. Here in the US, the officiant turns in the signed marriage license after the ceremony, and the marriage gets recorded. It may be different where you are. I urge you to find out a.s.a.p.
