I have to jot down ascribed and achieved statuses, ascribed meaning "unalterable", then I have to explain them in the 3 major perspectives (structural functionalism, conflict theory and symbolic interactionism). The first one addresses the contribution to the maintenance of society, harmony and evolution. Thus I have to explain why being Caucasian provides harmony in society.

  1. Well, maybe you can state that as a Caucasian you have the opportunity to stand up to racism, and to be an example for other white people in your community by spreading tolerance, and acceptance.

*Edit* of course that just talks about the racial aspect.  But I think that is a really good opportunity!

  2. see i understand it better now .....

but my answer is still the same

i dont know what school or college gave you this as a paper

but it is illogical to suggest that being white has given "harmony" to society

i have NO idea what that q even means in logical terms

    sorry i cant help ;-)

society and evolution are veyr diferent and i can try to have a think about that....

but harmony i jsut cant see the logic or any actual answer for that

this is why no-one can answer that

    it makes no sence

you shoudl ask your teachers to fix that , as i fear  no one will be able to help you on that aspect untill they do

    you know what

i stll cant make a lot of sense outa this q

who ever wrote this paper for you is a total idiot and has no idea about sociology....nor making sense

i half think they are just trying to waste time until your terms over

    additonal

it seems what the q is trying to say

in a very over complicated way with  too many un necessary big words

    is

what has the white race done for society and its progress

do you think thats what it is?

    additional

    Liesel

do you find that the real problem with the whole q is basically the word "harmony"??

i think its the one word makes the least amount of logical sense in this q

it is just not the right word for this...

and as the main aspect of the question, is kinda important to understand its relativity!!!

  3. BOOOOOOOO Mark!

harmony might be defined as status quo--is that a good thing?

  4. Put this. In todays enconomy, there is no such thing as harmony, whether you are black white, yellow or purple. But being white makes you less prone to rascism. You dont havepeople staring a you as you walk down the street and thinking (woah! is this persona terrorist). Getting a job is easier being white. You arent as prone to diseases. The list goes on and on

  5. You have to do more than just "be" Caucasian.  You have to act Caucasian to provide order in society.

  6. Maybe you could explain how race (Caucasian or otherwise) is a socially constructed concept and then go on to explain how that caused unity in some instances. The Caucasian examples I can think of, unfortunately have most often lead to exclusionary acts, so it's difficult to frame them in the shape of 'harmonious.'  Perhaps the 'majority rules' cliche can be shaped with your expertise to sound positive.

  7. I feel so sorry for you.  That last sentence made me laugh.

  8. I seriously doubt that is the assignment... I think you better ask your teacher to clarify. I have a very strong suspicion that your socialism teacher wants you to explain a shared social order, in which you explain how contrived and perceived positions in society allow for a joined impression.

Structural Functionalism: Everyone falls into a category in a paradigm and creates a system.

Conflict Theory: Inherent contradictions in society create conflicts which eventually lead to social change. This allows for flux and change.

Symbolic Interactionism: Blum believed in human study rather than social study. People adjust their behavior to actively construct their world.

"Caucasian" is not a valid variable to argue these theories... if it is the assignment it is a weak one.

*additional* Frau Frau, I do think the "harmony" word confuses the question, but I have a larger problem with the Caucasian variable... If the teacher wanted to know how race helps compartmentalize and construct society then he/she should have just worded the question that way... it would still include white members of society and better illustrate, especially, conflict theory. I think she has the question wrong.
