  1. Most rinks offer group lessons on a "Learn to Skate" kind of basis.   That will give you a very good grounding in skating skills - basic forward and backward skating, crossovers, stopping and onto more complicated skills such as 3turns, mohawks, basic spins and jumps.  So yes, you would end up significantly more stable by the end of it  :)

I suggested group lessons as it is significantly cheaper than private coaching and will be sufficient for marshalling.

However, you may find you don't want to stop there . . .  !!

  2. Take figure skating classes.

  3. you don't need to learn S*it all to do with figure skating to be a marshall, i used to be one myself and you only need to learn the basics to start with, concentrate on learning to go forewards and backwards then progress onto crossing over both ways, then once you think you have mastered it practise your spray stops (considering you have hockey blades)

once you become a marshall it wont be long till you progress and learn new tricks and maneuvers

  4. As others have already said, ask your local rink if they teach basic skating skills in group classes. Basically what you want to learn what to do is just really basic stuff anyways, so it's just a waste of money to get a private coach that charges 15-20 dollars an hour just to teach you how to do crossovers.

Basically it seems like you're more interested in learning how to do stuff like skate backwards and do crossovers and maybe the easiest steps than to actually learn the sport which is basically all you need to help people out in public sessions anyways.

If you take two classes a week and skate another once or twice on your own, you'll be skating pretty well in 6 months for what you have in mind.

  5. I would suggest taking learn to skate or group lessons at your local rink. I would call the rink and ask them about their group lessons and see what they have to offer.
