I am on BT Broadband and now want to add a laptop...?

I am on the Option 1 with BT with a wired router with my computer. I am buying a laptop for my daughter who would now like to connect to the internet. Do I change to wireless or hub so we can both be online??

  1. BoyRacer isn't wrong. I got a free home hub on option 1 when I renewed my contract. They knocked £5 off my monthly fee!

    If you can't get one free, then you could just get a wireless access point to add to your existing router.

    I had a Voyager 2091 and a linksys wireless router set up as a access point. A bit of a swine to set up. The reason I did it that way was that I wanted to keep the broadband voice functions of the voyager. I lost that after a lightning strike. hence the home hub.


  2. Depends on how many outputs your router has, easiest way is to get wireless, ring bt and they might give you one free if you say your thinking of switching!

    Edit: Thanks for the thumb down, i bought a wireless laptop recently and called BT, because I had been with them over 12 months my contract was out so they gave me a free wireless router and knocked £2 a month from my monthly fee to stay another year.  If your wired router has more than one output you can plug more than 1 pc into it!  Good luck...

  3. You can either call BT and ask if you can upgrade to a wireless BT Home Hub, which they'll charge you for, or you can go to a computer store such as PC World and buy a wireless ADSL router, which will cost you anywhere between £25 and £300.

    For a decent quality, simple wireless and wired ADSL router, you're looking at about £45.

  4. Either use the laptop wired, or buy a wireless access point an connect this to the router for laptop wireless connection.

  6. Yes change to bt wireless hub and you should be able to use a wired connection with the main pc and wireless with the laptop.

    costs nowt.

  8. you can plug your laptop into the router or you can use wireless in another room to do this you will have to leave the main computer switched on
