After having a knee surgery...does the school district have to provide special transportation arrangements? The surgeon did say that I would be on crutches anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks and walking to the bus stop on crutches would be extremely hard...especially if I stay after...that makes the bus stop a whole lot further from my house...

  1. A couple of years ago, a high school student in my neighborhood broke a leg and was in a cast and on crutches.  The school system provided a mini van to transport him to and from school until he was off of crutches.

Problem is that all systems do not provide this type of assistance - check with yours. (and learn the correct way to use your crutches and life will be easier, believe me)

  2. I doubt it.

  3. You would not be eligible through an IEP, but you might be eligible for it through a 504 plan.  Call (or have mom call) your school ASAP to get the arrangements set up.  They should be able to move your bus stop temporarily.

I had knee surgery while in high school.  There was no way that I could have gotten up and down the biggest step while on crutches.  Just something to think about .

  4. Bring in a letter from your MD on any restrictions and go in with your parent BEFORE school starts to see what options are available for you.
