  1. D, you went to Australia and the thing that interested you most were art galleries?! Do you have a soul?

Anyway, to answer the question, most of the things to see and do are on the east coast. You probably would want to spend some time in Sydney, which has a ton of things to do. Climb the harbor bridge, opera house, harbor cruise, great shopping, food, nightlife. Its a very nice and clean city.

If you want a more..."traditional" aussie experiance, stay somewhere a little more inland. There are towns with cattle ranches and horses and that kinda thing.

If its the water you're after, you can't go wrong with staying about halfway up the coast. Byron Bay, Yeppoon, Surfer's Paradise, Korora, and Maroochydore all boast amazing waterfronts.

If you like the tropical thing, then Cairns is the place to be. Its located in the tropics and has great rain forests that you can walk to even ride a cable car over.

Hope this helps, and good luck with your trip. Australia is a truely amazing country and you'll love every minute of it!

  2. You will need about 12 months and you need to see it all. From the cold south to the very hot north and everywhere in between. There is no place that stands out over the rest and there are thousands of places you should go and see and things you should do. Just go for as long as you can and see as much as you can in that time.

PS Some places are free but most will cost far too much for you to see all.

  3. I'd say the Great Barrier Reef is a must see! There are plenty of activities in the area for the whole family.

I spent a week staying in Port Douglas, which is 70km north of Cairns. A little less crowded than Cairns, more family oriented rather then backpackers.

From Port Douglas I was picked up and taken to my activities - day on the reef Scuba diving (so much incredible marine life!) and one afternoon white water rafting (maybe not for the whole family, but lots of fun!). I booked my activities through http://www.godo.com.au - they have hundreds of activities across Australia.

For accommodation I stayed at the Rydges Sabaya - beautiful resort. All accommodation in the area is serviced by local buses that run every 15 mins and transport you in and out of town..

Hope I've given you some ideas, enjoy your time in Oz!

  4. Hi there.

One thing that you need to grasp before you come to Australia is that it is a BIG country. To see most things you would need to be travelling for at least a year. If it is your first time here, take at least a month to 6 weeks and travel the east coast from Melbourne to Cairns, taking in the sights from the city, bush, rainforest, Great Barrier Reef. If you have time left over fly to Uluru.

These places are all on the tourist trail though so be prepared to be crowded by other travellers.

There are so many amazing places off the tourist trail that are often not too far away from the cities.. Such as waterfalls, mountain tracks, swimming holes etc.

I think the best thing to do would be to buy a book, check out tourist web sites and decide on the places that sound the best to you...

  5. depending on where you are going and how long for. but here are some cool  places:

    Sydney harbour bridge.

    Sydney Opera House

    Great Barrier Reef

    Uluru

    Australia Zoo

    just a couple

  6. Great Barrier Reef is beautiful, but it depends what you're after.

If it's tourist things, then the Opera House, Harbour Bridge in Sydney, Zoos etc. But the best way to see somewhere (particuarly if you've got relatives here) is to stay a while and get to know a place... it'll grow on you much more. Go to the Dandenongs in Melbourne (mountains), go to St Kilda beach and local shops there, shop in the CBD and Bridge Road Richmond, go to Melbourne Zoo, an AFL game, the Rialto tower (for views) or Eureka tower.

you can get an idea of melbourne in a few days, but a week would be better at least.

  7. Spend a few days in Bangkok on the way to OZ its a brill country. Cairns is a nice place to stay before you go to visit the Barrier Reef.  Sorry I found OZ boring.  The Sydney Harbour coffee cruise is nice.  The Blue Mountains are lovely.  The best thing about OZ is probably the Art Galleries if your into that sort of thing.
