It should mention that I do plan on learning some phrases (in Italian) , so I don't have to completely rely on everyone speaking english for me.

  1. if you have money and are spending it, anyone in the world will be friendly to you

  2. Most people are very friendly and will understand english. I have been to Rome twice already and have never had a problem, actually i have had a blast comunicating with natives. But as you mentioned and others have said, you should try learning some basic words/phrases like Good Morning - Buon Giorno, Thank you - Grazie, You're welcome - Prego, Very good - Molto Bene, etc. the point is to show gratitude to people using their language... you will make a difference and it will make you feel awesome!

  3. I have traveled to Italy 4 times already and the last time I went with my American friend who just wouldn't even say Grazie or Prego at the beginning. I used my other language and they were friendlier to me than to her. It was like they would ignore her and direct all communication to me. I noticed this more in restaurants and if we were going to take a bus to go somewhere and needed directions. But the moment she started trying, they began to be friendlier to her. I think it's all in how much you try to accommodate to them. Remember that you are going to ANOTHER country, not an extension of the USA, so they don't have to accomodate you. You have a good start by learning phrases and getting knowledgable about the place you will visit. This is a good start.

Also, in general, Romans are not as friendly as citizens from smaller towns. I found friendlier people in the south as well as north around Venice, not in Rome.

  4. Pretty friendly.  We stopped in some restaurants that are not very touristy, and they were not as friendly in there.  But the tourist areas are super friendly.

  5. I can't imagine any problems,

Its not like they are going to ignore, or even want to start a conversation with you ?

Although maybe consider - Group Tours of the city, if you are worried about, getting directions or ordering food ..etc.
