Is the weather nice in May and June?

Where should I go in Italy, what city should I go to?

What is there to see in Italy?

Is it clean or dirty?

  1. How much time do you have?

I would recommend going to Tuscany. Visit- Florence, Pisa, Siena and San Gimignano. Siena is the best place ever. There is so much to see in Italy. If I lived there my whole life I would never get to see all it's beauty. It is beautiful. In Siena, they clean the streets with a street cleaner every morning. I lived there.

Rome is fabulous too. Must go there.

A good travel book is Rick Steves' Italy.

  2. How long have you got?!

Italy has so many treasures, you'd need a year to see just the best bits.  It sounds like you're coming from far away - so do you want to tick off the big name sites while you're there?  Or do you want a relaxing holiday?

Italy is famous for it's art (think Leonardo's Last Supper, Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo's David) and history (think Colosseum, Pompei, medieval villages).  But you'll be cultured out in two days if you try and squeeze too much in - and you'd be missing out on modern Italian culture too.

Here are two suggested holidays with some variety in them:

Idea 1 - Fly to Naples, visit Museo di Capodimonte for some fab old art, taste the original pizza, wander in the little streets of the historic centre.  Train/car to Pompei (Roman town preserved by a volcano some years before Christ).  Train/car to Sorrento on Amalfi coast for a taste of Italy's beautiful landscapes, and the crystal blue mediterranean.  Walk along the cliffside.  Eat in one of the old trattorias - Italian country cooking at its best.

Idea 2 - Fly to Florence, visit Uffizi gallery to see fab old art such as Michelangelo's David, climb the dome of the Renaissance cathedral for some fab views (inside and out), wander the antique markets and visit Palazzi.  Take a daytrip out to a smaller place such as Siena, Fiesole or Volterra, to see the green hills of the Chianti wine region.  Sample the Chianti!  Travel on to Lucca (wonderful small city, less overrun by tourists than Florence) and Pisa (taking in the Leaning Tower) and fly out of Pisa.

In answer to your other questions, yes, the weather is lovely in May and June, and yes it's clean, at least as much as any city!    Naples are having a rubbish collecting strike at the moment, so that might be an exception, but otherwise, it's very much as you would want.

  3. I have some average weather charts at the link below.  The area it refers to is right between Rome and Tuscany, so it should work as a really good average for you:

  4. I'm going in May.  Weather is in the mid - 70's (average) in May.  Low 80's in June.  I believe it will be more crowded in June as the Summer tourists arrive.  It looks like there are a lot of beautiful places in Italy, but I plan to spend a week in Rome.  Rome is an urban area that has been used for 6,000 years or so, so we shouldn't expect it to be spotless (or even very clean).   In addition, because of it's ancient heritage, almost nothing new has been built since World War Two.  There is plenty to see to keep a person busy for at least a week in Rome.

  5. Weather in May and June is going to be hot. You need to tell us how long you are coming to Italy for so we can tell you where to go!

Rome, the capital should not be missed as it is amazing and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Like most main cities it is a little dirty here and there, but that is normal!

There are many other places to go, things to do and see...you need to decide if you want to go to the seaside, mountains, main cities, small villages, off the beaten track, on the tourist track etc...

Look into visiting Sicily too - it has a mixture of all of the above and is such a beautiful island.
