Question:

I am planning a trip to Peru in August. So far I have been communicating with Peru for Less. Any suggestions?

I have no experience planning a trip like this. I know I can go through the Auto Club, but it seems like the other smaller vacations I've planned through them have been rather expensive.

I am worried about the online travel agencies because I have had two terrible experiences with Hotels.com, and I would really hate to have a terrible experience on a trip like this.

If you have any recommendations, please let me know.

I would appreciate answers from those people who are actually on Yahoo Answers to share knowledge, thoughts, and advice rather than the people who make rude comments or smart remarks.

Thank you.

  1. THird World?  First of, if you go to Lima, Cusco, Trujllo, Piura, Chiclayo, or Arequipa it won't feel like third world.

IN fact Cusco is gringolandia and very European / Americanised.

    Peru for Less is rreputable

    So is amazingperu.com

    They're both gringo run.

  2. i would personally not go thorugh any travel agencies. Ive been there like 9 times, and it's always been rather cheap. Just book your flights and you porbably might want to book a hotel there, but don't do it thorugh any companies here. Book 4 or 5 star hotels, they are still cheap. And, especially in Cuzco, there are relatively cheap and good tourism agencies on seriously every corner. And they all speak english pretty well because that's what their business relies on. I've done it several times and im still alive and well. Believe it's a beautiful country, but honestly, if you feel unsafe doing it the old skool way, then just go through an agency from here. But that might cost you some. Make sure you do your research.

  4. I know planning a trip to the third world can be daunting. First, check out the flights. The best bet is usually LAN, because they have flights all the way to Cuzco (obviously through Lima, but the fact that you fly to Cuzco in the same airline will usually make it cheaper), but you can also fly to Peru in American, Delta and Continental. Second, stick to 4 star hotels. 5 star hotels in Peru are expensive and 3 star hotels can be under par (for some reason the gap between 3 and 4 star can be huge). Third, Cuzco is generally expensive (especially after Machu Picchu became 1 of the new 7 wonders). In Cuzco y recommend trying a Casa Andina Hotel. Fourth, your biggest risk is not having a train ticket to Machu Picchu. there is only one company that does the service and only 2 trains per day, so book in advance (I'm enclosing the web page of the train operator). Fifth, Don't plan anything for your first day in Cuzco. The city is at 3,500 meters over the sea level (that's more than 10,000 feet!) so give your body time to get used to the rarefied air.

I'm enclosing a Peru Travel web were you can get some info as well as the Casa Andina hotel web ( I stayed in one last October when I visited Cuzco and it was very nice)

    Hope this helps

  5. That depends on the kind of trip you want to do. The classic 5-day (basically Cusco-Machu Picchu); you can include Arequipa, Puno or maybe the Amazon rain forest (that will increase the amount of days and budget needed).

I suggets you visit the official peruvian tourist info site

    www.peru.info

there you can have a much clear idea of what kind of trip you want to do, what does Peru has to offer besides M.Picchu and they also have links to hotels. And they even have a tourist assistance place where you can ask for help and guidance.

    Hope this helps!

  6. When I was planning I tried this company called Tico Travel who at first I thought was just Costa Rica but they also had a Peru section. I called them and I actually talked to a lady from Peru. I did not end up going to Peru but she was helpful.
