We would like the most authentic type somewhere the locals go, not the tourist type places. Good, clean, friendly. I lived there 20 yrs ago and I know the city has grown a lot.

Also, try Ray's 823 Hoefgen Ave

  2. at La Fonda

  3. Ole,

Remember  West Ave?? Jacala's Located at 606 West Ave..

been around of 75 years, one of my family fav's. you can't go wrong w/ Los Barrios also been around for 30 or so years.

Don't Forget Tip Top on Frederickburg for Chicken Fried Steak it's be around about 75 year also... Hope it stir fond memories

  4. I agree with everyone who said Mi Tierra!!!! I had it for the first time a little over a month ago and I'm about ready to drive 5 hours back there just to eat some more of their food. I had the Chilaquiles Famosos! I'm about to start drooling all over my computer just thinking about that food!!!! :) MMMM!

    Here's their web site http://www.mitierracafe.com/default.html

  5. idk but there was this blanco cafe that was prety deppressing so i dont reccomend that...

    *mama margies

    * cha-chos

    *nichas

    those places are good

  6. LOS BARRIOS OR LA HACIENDA, BOTH OWNED AND OPERATED BY THE BARRIOS FAMILY.  I AM SURE THAT YOU REMEMBER LOS BARRIOS?

THERE IS ALSO A MEXICAN FOOD RESTAURANT DOWNTOWN.  IT IS ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE HENRY B. GONZALES CONVENTION CENTER.  IT IS WEST ACROSS ALAMO AND BESIDE THE PALACIO DEL RIO HOTEL.  IT IS ON THE EDGE OF LA VILLITA.  I AM SORRY THAT I CAN'T REMEMBER THE NAME, BUT THE MARGARITAS (ON THE ROCK) ROCK AND IT WILL BE AN ADVENTURE TO FIND THIS LITTLE JEWEL.  YOU WILL KNOW IT WHEN YOU GET THERE; THERE ARE THE MEXICAN BINGO CARD IMAGES ON THE CEILING.

  7. Salsalitos on Nacodoches

    Los Generals near Nacodoches/1604

  8. I have to disagree about Mi Tierra.  It has a fun atmosphere, yes, but the food is really not very good.

Pappasitos is popular, and Alamo Cafe is great also.

    Those are my suggestions.

  9. You absolutely have to go to Mi Tierra (I think I spelled that right)...I'm not sure where in San Antonio it's at but it is the best.  I was taken there twice on business and I will go there every time I return to San Antonio.  I've been to Pappasito's.  It's good but doesn't seem truly authentic...

  10. It depends on which meal you want.  If you are looking for breakfast try Taco Taco on Hildebrand.  There is a little lady that stands at the counter all morning making homemade fresh tortillas.  Great Chilaquiles!

For enchiladas try any of the Blanco Cafes.  The original on the older part of Blanco Rd. will give you the best "neighborhood: feel.  Best cheese enchiladas in the world!

One of my new favorites is a place on the corner of Bitters and Hwy 281 North called El Jarro De Arturo's.  Everything there is good and they have great margarita's.  Los Barrios is also a good pick.

  11. yes

  12. Yes, Pappasitos.

Nothing on the Riverwalk will do.

  13. Pico de Gallo and Casa Rio in the Downtown area are good but there is also a place called Matamoros on I-10 and UTSA Blvd. that is very good and the atmosphere is nice. There is a restauraunt on the NE side called Las Carretas (on Perrin Beitel...across the main post office)...IT IS SOOO GOOD! I am very picky about Mexican food and Mexican rice and I LOVE everything from this place (including margaritas). When my family comes from out of town they ALWAYS want to go there and it is not expensive at all! Have a nice time in SA!

  14. I would say off of the Riverwalk but still in a tourist area would be Las Margaritas.  However, they are next to Mi Tierra so you don't really get a huge crowd bc everyone sees Mi Tierra first.  It is a great atmosphere and their enchiladas verdes are the best.  I would also recommend Henry's Taco house and Pierdas Negras, both are right off of highway 35 and about a block apart.  Mama Margies is actually pretty good for being a chain restaurant, but the "hole in the wall" restaurants are the best.  Dora's Cafe and Bar has been in business for about 30 years, her fideo is a favorite.  Good luck!

  15. If you're looking for something authentic, where the locals go, then steer clear of the Riverwalk. There are some great places on the Riverwalk, but the locals usually only go there when they have friends in from out of town. Here are my suggestions.

    Los Barrios

    El Jarro

    Piedras Negras

    Cha Cha's (Medical Center)

    La Paloma

For a quick bite, the locals  go to Taco Cabana or Las Palapas.
