  1. Acapulco was the original tourist destination.

Once you are out of the border area there are places too numerous to mention.

Cancun gets a yuppie crowd and a blend of people that are afraid of Mexicans for some reason.

My faith has never restricted nor prohibited me from travailing all over Mexico.

If you know this site , people are scared to death of Mexicans and are always asking "Is it Safe?"

The Mexican plateau with the numerous places Queretaro

    San Luis Pototsi.

If its culture and flavor you want then stay away  from all the coastal areas.

Oaxaca--Chiapas-Cuernavaca--Vera Cruz and many more places

Rhino should know that there is no place close to the border that that could come close to giving a good indicitive and a good perspective of all of Mexico

  2. I would respectfully beg to differ with the first poster here. There are many nice, small, typically Mexican towns close (within a one hour drive) to the border with the U.S.

I currently live in one of them. In all fairness, perhaps he is talking about the many well known, rather notorious, cities/towns located "on" the border which are often an embarrassment to both countries. In that case I would absolutely agree with him.

Rhino is correct in that the U.S. Mexico border is very long and it would depend on where you were coming from and where exactly you intended to cross the border.Without more specific information from you I'm afraid no one here can give you any helpful or accurate guidance.

  3. Acacris missed the part where you said close to the border.  All his recommendations are long drives.

It would help to know where you're coming from, because a short drive south of the Texas border is a long drive if you're coming from California.  Could you update your question?
