  1. Live closer to major US Military Posts, such as Frankfurt, Nuremburg, Amberg, Bamberg, Heidelburg.  The Germans are more apt to speak English because of the every day contact with our American Soldiers, and you'll be tons of Military Civilians, Soldiers, and family members (and maybe they can get you on post to buy all the comforts of home (USA)).

  2. While Mark and Crzypvt

are correct, I would also recommend that you check out the local Volkshochschule (school where German language courses are offered among other things) wherever you do end up moving. Every major city has one and it is a very inexpensive and effective way to learn to communicate with the local population. If you are planning on living in Germany it will be helpful to learn at least the basics of the local tongue.

The one in three reference the other guy made is not always true and you will limit the scope of your experiences there significantly if you only go where you can get by with English. Besides, the people really appreciate when you have taken the time and interest in learning their language.

I come from California and I find it frusterating when someone comes up to me and just starts rattling off in Spanish. Even if you butcher the language (which most of us do at first) people are more likely to warm up to you if you at least try. Good luck.

By the way, I live in Mainz. Beautiful city, rich with culture and history, close to the French, Belgium and Holland borders, right on the Rhein river. I love it here because it is large enough to offer the conveniences that I have come to appreciate from big cities but most of the residential areas are more like small villages. Low crime and beautiful scenery. Also there is a large American military population in this region, so there is always a taste of home if you feel the need.

  3. Well i would suggest checking out this web site.

    www.cpol.army.mil

This will tell you what kind of jobs are in Germany right now for Americans.

1 out of 3 Germans speak at least passable english, so communication is not too hard. Plus english is a Germanic language so there are alot of words and grammer in common.

Living near a military base is a good idea for the comforts of home and you can do something for your country while traveling europe.

I live in Wuerzburg and it is a nice safe city with plenty of things to do. If you are looking for a night life it is also a good place with alot of night clubs. It is also in the Franken region of Germany. This is the home of the worlds finest wines.

So if your looking for Great food, The Best wine and beer. Germany is a good place.

If you would like to move here i would suggest applying for the jobs while you are in the states. If you get a GS-9 or higher job there is a chance that the Army will pay for your housing over here.

    Good luck

  4. Berlin is the New york of germany I lived there 3 yrs 2yrs military 1 on my own

all the comforts of home easy communicating with the citizens

  5. True about Berlin... but, if you don't like all that big stuff, the area where i live is perfect... if you want something big for a day you only have to drive an hour... my dad moved here (he's american) and found a woman and raised me... here are lots of americans and the military base bamberg is not far away. My town is Bad Rodach by Coburg in Oberfranken. You might wanna look it up it's so nice

    http://www.bad-rodach.de/ <---- my town

http://coburg.de/ <--- the little bigger town 15 min. away and the military base city :http://www.stadt.bamberg.de/

they are all historic citys. so you'll also get a bit culture :)
