  1. first is it road or trail since you did not say look at the web site below for inform

  2. A hybrid or fitness bike would suit you well;  visit your local bike shops and start a dialogue with the pros there.  If you stick to the major brands(Trek, Specialized, Gary Fisher, Kona, Giant, GT, Cannondale, Scott, Felt),  a weak frame is not really a point of worry since they all come with lifetime frame warranties.   Take your time and dont buy a bike on your first visit.   A bike is a long-term investment;   if you test ride several at different places, you should be able to narrown your choice down to the one for you.    Bring along a biking friend;  most of us bikers are waaaaay glad to help a newbie get into this great sport.....

  3. Buy a bike for the type of terrain in your area.  If you are riding on dirt roads or in the mountains you will want a mountain bike with a good tread tire.  If you are going to ride on city streets a beach cruiser or racing bike may be good for you.

  4. Go to a bicycle shop.  You will pay a little more, but they will fit the bike to you and help you find the best one for your needs.  The better bicycles are also a lot lighter than the cheap ones, so you won't tire as quickly.

  5. Buy a used bike on Craigslist.  Just put bike brand names into the search box ex. Cannondale, Haro, Eastern, Iron Horse.  You can get a great name brand bike for a 1/3 of the cost if you buy it used rather than new.  Go chit chat with someone at your local bike repair shop, tell them that you are planning on buying a used bike and would they mind taking a look at the bike before you buy it? Sometimes there might be a small fee for an inspection but usually not.  You could always bring the bike there for a tune up to show your gratitude though...  Or when you find something you like pose a question on Yahoo Answers like, "Is $90 dollars a good deal on this Cannondale?" add a link to the listing or just type in the make, model, year, add ons etc...

  7. All good answers.  I would add that you not be put off by some of the prices.  You may spend a hundred or two more at the bike shop, but you'll enjoy the ride far more AND spend far less on maintenance.

Good choice to ride outside along with the stationary bike.  Have fun!
