  1. You will need to apply to become a Permanent Resident before you move. If you have no family here then you will need to find a company that will hire you, or apply via skilled worker.

You can find out more here about applying via skilled worker, and take the test to see if you qualify.

I disagree with pppersephone06's blanket statement about Montreal. As an American who lives here, I have NEVER experienced any kind of mistreatment, based on my nationality, and know many Americans who have had nothing but great experiences here!

If you can immigrate via skilled worker or find an employer who will hire you (it will be difficult, as they have to prove they can't find a Canadian to hire to do the job) then you should go for it! Montreal is an amazing city!

  2. if you are going to live there forever, take all of your money

  3. If you are coming for school, get a student visa - see the link below. I could be wrong here - it's been a while since I was in University - but it seems to me it should be easier to get a student visa than just a work visa. In any case, the link I have given you has a place to go for a Link to the Temporary Foreign Worker application Form, so you might want to check that out too.

I can't tell you how much to bring - that would depend on a lot of variables,  but right now the Canadian and the U.S. dollar are pretty close to par.  I do know that of all the cities in Canada I have lived in - 6 major ones - Montreal had the greatest variety of housing options of any of them.

    Hope this helps!

  4. It's not just as easy as moving up there. Canada has VERY strict immigration laws!!! Take it from someone who knows!!! It can take YEARS to get citizenship! Money wise...it is expensive coming from the States to Canada. Do your research well. I would suggest British Columbia...Montral is very over rated...and they really don't like Americans.
