Firstly, here public schools are the equivilent of private schools in America, and state schools are the equivilent of public schools.

Few public schools have a bus services, which you have to pay for. Fewer state schools have a bus service, if any do.

Kids have to make their own way to school.

Are you American ? If so, "public schools" has a completely different meaning in the UK. A  "public school"  here is an independant, fee paying school,  and  the American idea of a public school is generally referred to as a state school.

So UK public schools are usually quite wealthy and priveleged places...and have no need of a school bus!

Some of the more remote rural state schools have a bus service, but in London it is normal for children to make their own way to school, as most live very near.

State schools don't provide transport in London, provided children have the right Oyster card they get free transport on public transport and in exceptional circumstances & depending on Council policy, the local Council may give children transport to school (usually kids in special schools, some children in mainstream may get it short term but it depends on circumstances).

Some private schools do put on a school bus but it's funded by parents in addition to paying school fees.

As confusing as it sounds, public and private schools are the same here - you have to pay.

State schools are the government run schools.

I have not heard of a school, private or state who have a bus service in London.

Getting your child to and from school is your responsibility.
