Spray entire area with  total kill product, wait 10 to 14 days, remove dead plant material, then lay a HEAVY shade cloth material down. Nail it into soil. You need to have it at least 3 layers thick.

Your only problem will be keeping the neighbors cat from getting into your beautiful litter box.

Now go drink a beer and relax.

You could try laying down black plastic before putting down sand.

They sell weed barrier clothes in garden centers. It would work good for sand boxes not much growes in sand.

Dear Lolani,

While placing a weed mat beneath the sandbox will prevent weeds from growing through, nothing will prevent the seeds dropped by birds from germinating and growing.

There are some pre-emergent herbicides that are relatively benign.  Their primary action is to encapsulate seeds, screening them from the water they need to begin growing.  But this will only work on the seeds already in the sand.

Seeds brought by  birds or ants are the primary cause of garden weeds.  But in a sandbox, it is easier to remove them since you don't have concerns about what is a weed and what is a desirable plant.  I think it was Burbank who once said, "a flower is an educated weed."

Pulling weeds in a sandbox is quite easy.  The roots have little to grasp.  The weed mat suggested by Aaron prevents the roots from taking hold in the earth.  While weeding is a never-ending chore, sandboxes are pretty easy.  Just get out there every couple of weeks and you'll have everything under control.

Remove all the top soil from beneath the box (usually about 4-6 inches).  This will definately delay the growth.  Also use a fabric beneath as some people have suggested.
