Question:

I am reading on Wikipedia about monitors. I am intrigued about the prospect of using a CRT monitor for TV?

What hardware is needed? Is there a CRT monitor which can directly connect to a coaxial cable or other TV signal wire/cable? If a computer would be required, what specs would be needed for comparable output(not like plasma, but like the older TV's)?

  1. there is already a gudget(tuner)  that you can watch tv directly to your monitor.

  2. You would need a tuner.  You can get digital tuners, and some of them have computer-type (15-pin d-sub) connectors.  Those can be connected directly to a computer monitor.  If you have a cable box with HDMI output, you need a monitor with DVI input and an HDMI to DVI adaptor.  You need either 15-pin or DVI connections for a computer monitor, so make sure the tuner and monitor match in capability.

Here is one such device  http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SIR-T165-H...

no longer manufactured, but you may be able to find it on d-bay.

Monitors do not have audio, so you will need a separate A/V receiver/amp for sound.

You only need to worry about specs if you are looking for HDTV.  Most computer monitors are at least as good as CRT TVs and are more flexible as to inputs (variable scan rates).
