  1. The first answer is sensible. But you should also think of the possibility that he is with you for yours.

    Don't loan him any money.

  2. the question is- why should that bother you?

you're dating someone for their personality, not their bank account.

  3. Lulu...great answer!!!  No one should be in any relationship that would be for their bank account. If you enjoy this person's company, their personality and they treat you kindly...filing for a bankruptcy shouldn't be an issue at all. Some people even though they have filed have had successful relationships and even though they fell on some financial hardships have come out of it with financial improvement. What you can do to protect yourself if the relationship progresses into something more serious is to have your debts in your own name. But, once they file, they can't do it again for 8 years, so, they will have to re-establish their credit again, which do happen, and they do come out of it fine. An old saying..don't judge a book by it's cover....you could be getting nervous over something so minor. This person could be the love of your life and be the best provider...

  4. This should definitely be a concern as you get to know this person better.  In particular, is the bankruptcy being caused by irresponsible spending or factors out of your friend's control, such as job loss or unexpected medical bills?  If there are no external factors at all, you should realize that people who like to spend 110% of their income aren't likely to change as they get older.  Making a long term commitment to a spendthrift is a big problem if you are naturally a saver at heart.  It's hard to save when your partner is constantly spending.  Remember, disagreements about money are the number one cause of arguments between spouses.

In other words, I would consider the possible bankruptcy a big red flag, but not necessarily a deal breaker.  Take things slowly and good luck to you both.

  5. Help him with the bankruptcy process.  Its a tough thing to go through, and he would appreciate it.

Make sure that he doesnt get depressed, and starts to work soon
