My little brother is 12 years old and he have flunk once back in 3rd grade and now a major test is coming up and its on math. Math is like the number one subject that he can't focus on. He sometimes (well mostly) multiply wrong, divided wrong, and doesn't really know things like how many inches is in a foot, how many foots is in a yard and ect.

Is this normal? I am really worry about him and he is a really slow thinker. Usually when i try my best to help him more on math, he always gets everything wrong and never focus on things I'm teaching him. How can i help him?

  1. math can be a hard subject but i would take him to a doctor or someone that tests for adhd because sometimes if you have it you cannot concentrait on something.

  2. go visit a doctor probably his brain doesnt function and he cant focus

  3. Kids have a hard time learning sometimes. Just try teaching him a different way.

My dad taught me how to divide and multiply using pennies. Like he would put 2 piles of 2 pennies on the table, and say I would have 2 piles of 2 pennies, or 2x2, and how many pennies would I have? And I would count and get the answer.

When you're teaching him, associate what you teach him with something. Like teach him a foot has a dozen inches, which is as many inches as he has fingers, thumbs, and hands. So 8 fingers, 2 thumbs, and two hands.

  4. Sometimes it is hard for a child to learn when there are more children in the class room. Your mom might want to talk with the teachers and see if there is any after school programs that might help him or a teacher helper giving him a little one on one. Also sometime the cild might have ADD (attention defict disorder). Have your mom observe him and get his teacher to do the same. Alot of time people rush to put a child on meds. for this when all they really need is just a little extra help but sometimes the meds. will help them to focus.

  5. People usually don't like subjects that they aren't good at.  If you don't like something, you probably don't want to focus on it for very long.  You'd rather be doing something that you feel successful at, right?

A lot of the things you are saying seems like a memorization problem.  You memorize math facts.  You memorize the units of measurement.  Memorization takes time and deliberate effort, and like we said before, if your brother doesn't like math, he's not going to take that time.

The best thing you can do is keep on it and get as much exposure to those math facts as possible.  There are lots of cds that sing the multiplication facts.  The one I use in my classroom is called Teacher and the Rockbots.  You might want to tell your parents to invest in some computer games too that require math.  I'll list some free ones at the bottom.

But at the end of the day, you may be right, that your brother is  a slow thinker.  But, just like driving, you can go slow and still get there.  It just takes longer.

  6. send him to a tutor or like Sylvan Learning Center

  7. He might have ADD...you should go to a doctor. And maybe if he does not get it..get your parents to explain to his teacher whats going on and maybe she will understand!
