I am refinishing the woodwork and oak floors in a room with a radiator. Can I take the radiator out?

Can I unhook the connections to the pipes and move the radiator without draining the system? I would also like to take the radiator outside and repaint it also. Is this possible and if so how do you suggest to do it. Thanks!

  1. its better to do the work with the radiator left as it is.

  2. I would leave the radiator where it is - just do the best you can with the radiator in place.

To paint the radiator, find a spray paint made for radiators (they should have some at your local hardware store).  Tape tarps behind, under and all around the unit.

  3. Yes, you can take the radiator out and paint it but you need to drain the system or it will drain itself all over your oak floor.  There are usually drain plugs or valves at or near the boiler unit.  Refilling and bleeding the system is the biggest part of the project.  You may want to enlist some professional help.
