I am renting a house that has a koi pond. The pump broke and the owner won't fix it. Can they live without it?

  1. they could but it you can loose all of your fish because the filter cycles the water and it can cause bad build of bacteria and they can possibly die. They need oxgenated water also.


  2. it can be as long they are not overcorowded,  all you do is spend more in water bill you have to do water changes often just to make the kois alive and healthy,  It will be cheaper to buy a new pump and your water will last longer than no filter.

  3. Not for long they can't because the pump runs the filter.   If the fish are yours then replace the pump, keep the old pump and remove yours and replace it with the broken one when you move out, make sure you keep your receipt so he/she can't try to say you stole it from them.  If they belong to the owner notify him/her again in writing that the pump is broken,  I would recommend certified mail.  Koi are quite expensive and notifying him in writing will prevent him from saying you didn't notify him of the problem and try to hold you responsible for the loss of the fish.

  4. Not for long, they need filtration for their... droppings
